Minnesota is a beautiful ride! A lot of the state is on a one mile grid, with a crossroad every mile and some of the intersections do not have a stop sign. Please be careful and slow down as you approach! Most of the TAT is on gravel hard pack roads which are well maintained, although there are a few roads that are dirt-based and can be muddy when wet. The Western part of the state is used for agriculture and during the height of the growing season, the crops are on both sides of the roads as far as you can see. The Eastern part of the state is where the landscape gains some altitude, some trees, and some beautiful jeep roads. Motels, gas and food are abundant and should not be a problem. The TAT starts in Sioux Falls, SD. This will give you a motel if needed the night before you start your ride. It ends in La Crescent, MN some 358 miles away, with motels just across the Mississippi River in La Crosse, WI. Enjoy the adventure, respect the environment, and RIDE WITH CARE!

Wyoming is a state known for its Wild West heritage and also officially named the “Equality State”. This trail starts in Afton, WY just 100 miles south of the Yellowstone National Park with its dramatic canyons and alpine rivers. Try to make time for a visit while you’re there!

The crossing is 784 miles to Newcastle with Teton National Forest, Jack Morris Hills, Alkali Basin, Red Devil Basin, Mexican Flat, Hangout Ridge, Red River Grizzly Wildlife Habitat Area, Medicine Bow Routt National Forest, and Thunder Basin National Grassland, just to name a few.

Motels, gas, and food are all located within acceptable limits. The overnight stay in Baggs connects with the Shadow of the Rockies TAT North/ South route. Here, the rider may plan a loop adventure. If you are just using the GPS tracks, which are fine and good, you might want to consider the maps for Idaho and Wyoming for the additional rider information.

Wyoming has a large percentage of dirt based roads. These are dusty when sun baked dry and muddy when rain water soaked. Enjoy the adventure and ride with care.

Starts in Newcastle, WY and ends 543 miles away in Sioux Falls.
SD has Mount Rushmore National Memorial. If you plan a visit, which could take several hours, please consider motel in the town of Keystone, a very fun place to visit. The next motel is 150 miles away. You do not want to be out there in the dark.

On this section, check out Black Hill National Forest, Custer State Park, Wind Cave National Park, Buffalo Gap National Grassland, Badlands Wilderness Area, Pine Ridge Reservation, RoseBud Indian Reservation, and Ring Thunder Section.

SD has a high percentage of dirt-based roads so expect dust when dry and mud when wet.

Motel, food, gas are all within acceptable riding limits and should not be a problem.

The Southeast section is all on one mile grids and I tried to avoid pavement and congestion as much as possible. This section will be different, but it is all part of the adventure. Enjoy and ride safe.

West Virginia starts in Ripley, WV and ends in Marlington, WV. The state is 166.88 miles in length and travels through the back country with county roads both paved and non-paved. The countryside is beautiful and peaceful.

At the very start, at mile marker 7.24 (so marked on the map) the rider has a choice to ride a technical section of mud holes and deep ruts (trust me, this short section will get your attention) or stay on the main route, which beautiful rolling hills.

Then again at mile marker 49.93 (marked on the map) the rider has another choice to ride a section that is very rocky (no county maintenance). But this section might be closed so be aware of a back track to the main TAT which, once again, is beautiful rolling hills.

Gas stops are close and not a problem. A motel is available at Sutton, VA (mile marker 89.77) if needed.

The TAT goes through the Monongahela National Forest and follows the Williams River for 40 miles or so and is very nice.

Then it’s out to Marlington, WV with motel, food, and gas.

West Virginia is short but is a beautiful ride.

Virginia is one of the original colonies with the slogan “Virginia is for lovers”. Well, Virginia is for lovers of adventure on the TAT, be it on a Dual Sport Motorcycle, a Jeep, or any vehicle capable of back road driving.

The TAT enters VA from Marlington, WV and traverses the WV, VA state line on a beautiful 20-mile section of hard-packed Jeep road. This opens up into the rural countryside with a paved back road and hard-packed dirt/ gravel roads. The TAT winds through the Monongahela National Forest, Back Creek Mountain Range, George Washington National Forest, Rich Patch Mountains, Jefferson National Forest, and Blue Ridge Mountains, just to name a few.

At Bland, VA, you cross I-77 and set your sights on Burkes Gardens. The hard-packed Jeep road is a 20-mile gradual ascent one-lane with many switchbacks and a beautiful valley at the top. Then it’s onto Hwy 16 S for the Back of the Dragon.

Toward the last of VA, the Hurricane Creek Road is 8 miles of twisting forest road with switchbacks. Damascus is the end and also the hub on the “Virginia Creeper National Recreation Trail”.

Idaho is updated and the route has changed. It still starts near Tremonton, UT and ends in Afton, WY. It goes through Emmett, ID (the junction with the Pacific Ocean Spur- the old Oregon) and then turns East to continue on to Afton, WY.

Most of the roads are dirt-based and muddy when wet, so keep that in mind. There is a good mixture of back road pavement, jeep roads, and forest service roads. The countryside is beautiful and includes lots of potato fields and if you arrive during harvest, it’s a sight to see. Enjoy Craters of the Moon National Monument, which is made up of 60 miles of lava rocks. You could think that you were really on the moon. Also check out Challis National Forest, Sawtooth National Forest, and the 20 mi section approaching Rocky Bar and Featherville for an overnight stay.

Visit Lava Hot Springs and Soda Springs if you have time and when you get to Afton, WY, you will only be 100 miles south of Yellowstone.

Enjoy the adventure and ride with care and respect.

Utah starts in Monticello and begins the climb up to Geyser Pass at 10,537 feet. Then, head down to Salt Flats Road, passing the entrance to Slickrock Bike Trail, and on into Moab. The Moab Diner here is a good lunch stop. There are several side trips here if you have the time, including Arches National Park, Onion Creek, White Rim, and Chicken Corners, just to name a few.

Next, it’s out into the desert to the town of Green River. This is a good overnight stop with motels and food. Try Tamarisk Restaurant for breakfast and Ray’s Tavern for an evening meal. There is a great side trip here if you want it. West of town, on I-70, is Black Dragon Canyon, a washed-out 8-mile Jeep road of rocks and sand that will get your attention for sure!

Utah has its own brand of beauty, with a lot of sand and rocks but also higher elevations of cooler temps, green trees, and mountains.

Turn North at the Nevada state line, and you’ll find food, gas, and a motel (Border Inn) at Baker, NV. You will need this stop as there is a lot of empty desert ahead including the Bonneville Salt Flats and the Golden Spike National Historic Site. Utah ends at Tremonton, just south of the Idaho line. Just as with all the states, Utah needs your respect. Ride safe and keep plenty of water and snacks.

Colorado is a truly beautiful section, starting in Trinidad, CO and ending in Monticello, Utah. You begin with a gradual climb up to the Continental Divide, crossing the Marshall Pass at 10,847 feet. You’ll find a great photo op around every bend of the road.

Motels, gas, and food are not a problem and each is identified on the maps. Salida/ Poncha Springs might be an overnight stay with comfortable motels and good food. If you have the time, turn North on 285 at Poncha Springs, then West on #162 and go to the mining settlement of St. Elmo. This stop will be well worth your half-day side trip!

On the Western side of the Divide is Lake City, CO, a must-stop overnight. Then you’ll head up to Cinnamon Pass, Animas Forks, and California Pass. Now you need to come back down, and Corkscrew will do that. You do need good brakes here and just control your speed. If you need food, gas, or a motel, then Silverton is just South on hwy #550. Then, back up to the rocky Ophir Pass at 11,743 feet. Head back down again, making your way to Monticello, UT. Be sure to enjoy the one-of-a-kind scenery in Colorado and ride safe.

The New Mexico section of the TAT is fairly short, at only 72 miles. You’ll be starting on Hwy #18 at the state line of New Mexico and Oklahoma, which is just a few miles west of Boise City, Oklahoma, and ending in Branson, Colorado.

New Mexico is a mixture of dirt based roads and hard-packed gravel. When the roads are dry, the riding is fast and can be dusty. If the roads are wet, then you’ll be dealing with slippery, sloppy mud.

At mile marker #56.77, take a right turn and head up several switchbacks to the Colorado state line. If you miss this turn, you will end up at a ranch and you do not want to do that, so stay on the trail.

New Mexico includes the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, complete with incredible rolling hills and valleys.

Note: Branson is just a short ride to Trinidad, CO with several good motels and restaurants.
